The altar guild is a group within the Episcopal Church whose purpose is to assist the clergy. The members work directly under the orders and authority of the priest in strict accordance with his wishes, irrespective of personal inclinations. The members have a special obligation to attend services and to make the responses audible.
Altar guild members should be mindful of the privilege of serving God in His sanctuary. Prayer is always the proper preface to altar guild work.
All members who have been confirmed are eligible for altar guild work. Membership in the mission’s altar guild is at the invitation of the vicar. With sincere devotion of mind and body, they strive to make their service an acceptable offering to our Lord. Altar guild members make their work a sacred duty, and their acceptance of the priest’s invitation is the indication of their willingness to work under his direction and guidance.
Training is needed in the mechanics of altar guild work to insure uniformly high standards of cleaning, polishing, laundering and mending. Training is usually handled by the Altar Guild Directress.
In general terms, the duty of the altar guild is to have ready those things necessary for the celebration of the Eucharist and the observance of the other Sacraments and the Offices of the Church.
Community outreach
A nationally known research organization asked Americans what Christian churches ought to be doing first and foremost.
Top answer among active Christians:
"Reach our neighbors, share our faith, help others to learn about Jesus."
Top answer from people who rarely or never attend church:
"Do more for the poor and the hungry."
Our Lady of the Lake has an outreach program that meets these two needs. It is called Canning Hunger. It is a very simple program in which people volunteer to collect food in their own neighborhoods every other month. Each person decides on the number of homes to visit. It does not take much time. But we get to know our neighbors, we offer to pray for them and their families, and we help to feed the hungry. Statistics show that children and seniors are most affected by poverty. Our Lady divides what we collect among the food banks at Clifton, Meridian, and Whitney.
If this sounds like something you would like to be involved in, either collecting or donating, please contact Deacon Sandra at the church.
The Episcopal Church Women (ECW) of Our Lady of the Lake was
organized to serve our church in any way possible and to have fun and
fellowship along the way. We meet at 11:30 AM on the first Tuesday
of each month except for the months of June, July, and August. Our
mission is to share with the world the redeeming love of our Savior
keeps our meetings focused on prayer, study, and giving.
